On Christmas Day, many individuals in Utah chose to work rather than celebrate at home. At Gallo Loco in West Valley City, co-owner Alberto Tello shared that the team was motivated to serve diners. 'We had an amazing dinner and party last night, but we also want to feed the people that want to eat today,' Tello stated. The staff recognized that their shift was about more than just work; it was about being together. Tello emphasized the family aspect, noting, 'My whole entire family is here.' This year marks a poignant Christmas for the restaurant as it is their first without their father, who passed away in November. After their shift, the family plans to honor his memory with a hike. Kim Tello, another co-owner, expressed her feelings about the loss, saying, 'My heart is broken, but my spirit is full of energy, and I want to be able to share what my father taught me.' Meanwhile, across the valley at Bambara in Salt Lake City, the holiday rush kept the staff busy. Server Grace Jones mentioned the excitement of working during this festive time, stating, 'We’re really busy, but I’m happy to be here.' She celebrated Christmas Eve with her in-laws and planned to return for Christmas dinner after her shift. However, some staff members felt the emotional weight of being away from family. Hostess Jamayca Salenga noted her sadness at missing celebrations with her family in the Philippines. She shared that she would connect with them via FaceTime and exchange gifts with her husband and in-laws after work. Working on Christmas Day allows these individuals to contribute to the community while keeping the holiday spirit alive. 'Merry Christmas, everyone!' Jones exclaimed, reflecting the sentiments of those who chose to work on this special day.
