Neena’s Market has been a staple in Coalville for over 15 years, operating as a family-owned grocery and kitchen. Managed by Jose Ponce, the market is run daily by his parents, Lupe and Cande, along with their siblings. Since its inception in 2011, the Ponce family has prioritized accessibility and a welcoming atmosphere, offering a blend of Hispanic and American products while maintaining later hours than most local businesses. Jose highlights their commitment, stating, "When other shops close at 6, we’re open until about 9. We want to be there for people when they need something." The Ponce family was drawn to Coalville's small-town charm after visiting family in the area, finding it reminiscent of their roots in rural Michoacán, Mexico. Upon acquiring their location, which previously housed a drugstore and an old movie theater, they devoted nearly a year to repairing and remodeling the space before opening. Lupe recalls, "At the beginning, it was a lot. We had to tear everything out. But little by little, with a lot of effort and sacrifice, we kept moving forward." The market's early years involved building trust within a community that often approached newcomers with caution. Jose noted that consistent presence was crucial in earning that trust. Neena's Market has garnered support from both long-time residents and visitors from nearby areas such as Evanston and Salt Lake City. Inside the store, customers often engage in conversations about recipes and cooking techniques, fostering a sense of community. Almost everything served in the kitchen is made from scratch, including fresh beans, pickled jalapeños, and fried tortilla chips. The menu features popular items like tacos, tortas, quesadillas, nachos, and burritos, with the chile verde smothered burrito being particularly well-received. Neena’s Market sources its meat locally from Bonneville Meats in Ogden, emphasizing freshness and quality. Jose states, "We try to do everything fresh. Nothing out of cans or jars if we can avoid it." The family’s presence is a distinguishing factor, ensuring that customers can rely on them for quality service and products. After 15 years in operation, Neena’s Market has become an integral part of daily life in Coalville, maintaining consistent hours and fostering long-term relationships with customers. Lupe expresses gratitude towards their patrons, saying, "To everyone who has supported us from the start, thank you very much." Neena’s Market is located at 47 S Main St. in Coalville, with orders available at (435) 336-4233.
