In recent days, the nation has been inundated with distressing news reports that have left many grappling with feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. Amidst this turbulent backdrop, experts are emphasizing the importance of taking proactive steps to protect mental health. As communities across the United States, including Utah, face the emotional toll of these events, mental health professionals are introducing practical strategies to help individuals cope. Jeff Lutz, a resident of Washington City, shared his personal approach to managing stress during these challenging times. "It helps to tap into nature and kind of get away from it," Lutz stated. He elaborated on his experience, noting that while the media often highlights negative events, he finds that daily life in his community is filled with positivity. "What I've found is that you know there's a lot of negativity if you watch certain things, but in the actual world in your day-to-day life, there's very little negativity." This perspective is echoed by many who find solace in nature, especially in Utah, where scenic landscapes abound. The emotional repercussions of current events have not gone unnoticed by mental health professionals. Lindsay Cowdin, a therapist based in Lehi, reported that many of her clients are experiencing heightened levels of stress and overwhelm. "It's a Monday, and I'm already seeing a lot of stress and overwhelm from a lot of my clients related to this," Cowdin remarked. She attributed this distress partly to the continuous exposure to news through smartphones and social media platforms. "It's not just the news itself that is difficult for a lot of people to read; it's the constant exposure because of social media," she explained. Cowdin advocates for moderation in consuming news, advocating for a balanced approach that allows individuals to stay informed without becoming overwhelmed. The impact of current events can be particularly acute for those living in areas directly affected by crises. Cowdin, who is licensed to practice in Minnesota, observed that her clients in that state are experiencing unique challenges due to their proximity to ongoing events. "I'm seeing it is having an impact on everyone, maybe more so those living in Minnesota, because again, they're on the front line," she noted. This sentiment resonates with many who feel a heightened sense of empathy and concern for their fellow citizens, regardless of geographical boundaries. To combat the potential negative effects of constant news consumption, Cowdin suggests that individuals establish personal limits for their media exposure. "We need to be careful not to go down that rabbit hole of doom scrolling, right? So, taking it in moderation, setting up limits for ourselves, for our kids," she advised. This strategy is particularly important for parents who may notice their children withdrawing or becoming more stressed in response to external events. Cowdin encourages parents to engage in open conversations with their children to check in on their emotional well-being. In addition to reducing media exposure, mental health experts recommend spending more time outdoors to boost mood and increase emotional resilience. Lutz emphasized the therapeutic benefits of nature, noting that he enjoys observing birds in Sullivan Park as a form of relaxation. "It's been kind of a lifestyle for me the last four or five years where I just stay off social media especially," Lutz explained. He acknowledges the challenges presented by constant news cycles but chooses to focus on more uplifting aspects of life. In conclusion, protecting mental health during uncertain times requires intentional effort and proactive strategies. By finding balance in media consumption and embracing the healing power of nature, individuals can mitigate the psychological impact of distressing news. Mental health professionals like Cowdin and residents like Lutz serve as reminders that even amidst turmoil, there are effective ways to cultivate resilience and maintain a positive outlook. As communities continue to navigate these challenging times, fostering supportive environments and prioritizing mental health will be crucial for overall well-being.
