Park City High School is set to host its 9th annual Holiday Meals Project, aiming to package over 1,000 meals for those in need.
Park City High School is gearing up for its 9th annual Holiday Meals Project, a large-scale charity event that packages meals for those in need. The initiative began over nine years ago when former student-athlete Ben Agnew proposed the idea after organizing smaller meal packing efforts with his family. The school's athletic director, Jamie Sheetz, supported the initiative, leading to the establishment of the Holiday Meals Project.
This year, the event is set for Saturday, with volunteers expected to gather at 10 a.m. in the school cafeteria. The goal is to package over 1,000 meals, which will then be distributed to families across Park City, Salt Lake City, and even into Wyoming. The project has garnered significant involvement from Park City High's Especially for Athletes club, the National Honor Society, and the Christian Center of Park City.
Sheetz recalled Agnew's initial pitch for expanding the project, which has now become a community staple held on the Saturday following the end of Christmas Break. The event's success is attributed to the dedicated volunteer base, allowing the project to grow year after year. This year marks a milestone, as Park City High expects to achieve its 1,000 meal goal for the first time. Additionally, the success of this event has inspired Wasatch High to consider launching a similar initiative.
The efficient volunteer participation has made meal preparation swift, with meals typically packaged within a short timeframe. Sheetz expressed appreciation for the community's support, noting that fundraising efforts have been robust. This year, Park City High set a fundraising target of $25,000 to support the event.
The Holiday Meals Project emphasizes the importance of community during the holiday season, as it brings people together to help those in need. For further information, interested parties can contact James Agnew at jeagnew@gmail.com.
