PARK CITY, Utah - Winter has officially arrived in Utah, bringing snow and icy conditions that prompt reminders from the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) about road safety. UHP Trooper Andrew Werner reported that Saturday morning saw various incidents, including slide-offs and minor accidents along I-80 in Parleys Canyon due to a combination of rain, freezing rain, and sleet. 'Our biggest problem this morning was it started to rain, and then we had frozen rain and sleet,' said Werner. Many drivers appeared unprepared for the challenging conditions, leading to numerous incidents. Trooper Werner emphasized the importance of vehicle readiness, advising drivers to ensure their vehicles have appropriate tires and to carry a spare set of chains. 'We had the chain law in effect for both directions on I-80, and there weren't many vehicles equipped with chains,' he stated. UHP reported approximately three dozen crashes and several slide-offs, with around 12 incidents resulting in injuries. Werner urged drivers to heed warning signs and to stop at designated areas to put on chains, as this could prevent accidents and costly tows. A viewer on the 'Utah's Weather Authority' Facebook page shared her experience of trying to drive up Parleys Canyon, warning others to avoid it, even with chains. 'If you don't have to drive, don't drive or delay it,' Werner advised, highlighting the need for patience during winter storms. The Utah Department of Transportation confirmed that snowplows were actively working to clear roads and prepare for ongoing snowfall. As winter progresses, authorities remain vigilant in ensuring road safety for all travelers.
