A new 5-mile connector trail between Wasatch and Summit Counties is set to open, enhancing recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.
A new 5-mile backcountry connector trail, the first of its kind, is set to open this year, linking the trail systems of Wasatch and Summit counties in Utah. This trail aims to enhance recreational opportunities for hikers, runners, and mountain bikers in the region. The project is a collaborative effort between the Wasatch Trails Foundation and the Mountain Trails Foundation, two organizations that have been working together for over six years to bring the vision of this trail to fruition.
The trail, named the BLT (Bonanza Loop Trail) to WOW Connector Trail, features a diverse range of terrains, including multi-use connectors, a steep downhill section specifically designed for mountain biking, and a hike-only spur known as Boulder Dash. Wasatch Trails Foundation Executive Director Mia Yue expressed enthusiasm for the trail, emphasizing its potential to offer users more options for extended rides. "I think it creates a lot more options for people to be able to do longer rides," she stated.
The completion of the trail was achieved at the end of the previous riding season, with installation of signage scheduled to take place in the spring following snowmelt. The project underwent extensive planning, including cultural studies and securing funding through the Wasatch County Trails, Arts, and Parks tax grant. However, the journey to this point was not without its challenges. The project faced several hurdles, including the need for adjustments related to wildlife mitigation areas and the complexities of constructing over the steep and rugged Tall T Peak, which stands at an elevation of 9,360 feet.
Yue reflected on the difficulties encountered during the planning process, mentioning that there were moments when it seemed the connection might not come to pass. "There were multiple times over the last three years that I was convinced this connection was dead in the water. Without the support and pure grit of our board and our main partner, Mountain Trails Foundation, we would not have made this happen," she explained. This sentiment underscores the collaborative spirit that has driven the project forward.
As a significant achievement for both foundations, the trail has garnered support from various stakeholders. Lora Anthony, Executive Director of the Mountain Trails Foundation, expressed pride in her organization’s role in the project, remarking that it showcases the success of long-term partnerships among different organizations. "The entire system of WOW trails isn’t just connecting communities through trails; it’s a shining example of what long-term, supportive relationships between many partner organizations can bring to bear," she noted in a press release.
Scott House, President of the Wasatch Trails Foundation Board, echoed similar sentiments, describing the excitement surrounding the WOWZA trail as part of the broader Bonanza Flat to WOW Trail connection. He highlighted the project’s importance in balancing wilderness and open space protection while ensuring meaningful trail connections are available to the public. House expressed hope that the trail's design would excite riders of all skill levels, contributing to the overall recreational landscape of the area.
The grand opening ceremony for the BLT to WOW Connector Trail is anticipated to take place once the wayfinding signs are installed in the spring. This event will mark a significant milestone in the development of the regional trail system, drawing attention to the collaborative efforts that have made it possible.
As outdoor recreational activities continue to gain popularity, the opening of this new trail is expected to attract a diverse group of outdoor enthusiasts, from casual hikers to avid mountain bikers. The project not only enhances local recreational opportunities but also serves to strengthen community ties by promoting outdoor activities and encouraging responsible usage of natural spaces. As visitors and residents alike prepare to take advantage of the new trail, the collaborative effort behind its creation stands as a testament to the power of community engagement and dedication to enhancing the region’s outdoor offerings.
