Holland's contributions to the church and education are notable. He served as the president of Brigham Young University from 1980 to 1989, a role that showcased his leadership and commitment to education within the church community. In June 1994, he was called to be an Apostle, becoming one of the longest-serving members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

In July 2023, Holland's wife, Terry, passed away, leaving behind a legacy that includes their three children, 13 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
