Letitia Lussier celebrates 45 remarkable years at Deer Valley Resort, inspiring generations of skiers with her passion and dedication.
PARK CITY, Utah — Letitia Lussier, a prominent ski instructor at Deer Valley Resort, reflects on her remarkable 45-year career, which began even before the resort opened its doors in 1981. Her journey in the skiing world is marked by countless memories and a significant impact on the lives of her students. One poignant memory stands out: a woman from South Africa, with striking red hair, who was overwhelmed with fear at the top of the bunny hill. "She just got so terrified at the top of what is considered an easy run," Lussier recalled. Through patience and encouragement, Lussier helped the woman conquer her fear, instilling confidence that allowed her to embrace the joy of skiing.
Lussier's approach to ski instruction has always centered on safety and building confidence among her students. "The thing that I’m most concerned about is safety, and I won’t compromise safety in any fashion," she asserted. The terrain and weather conditions in the mountains can change rapidly, making it crucial for her students to follow instructions carefully to maintain their safety. This foundational belief not only helps students enjoy skiing but also fosters a culture of responsibility on the slopes.
Originally from Maine, Lussier grew up skiing and dreamed of exploring the majestic mountains of the West. The opportunity to teach skiing at a new resort after a vacation at Snowbird was a turning point for her. "I realized I could pursue a dream and go to college while teaching skiing," she shared, highlighting how her teaching career financed her education. Lussier earned an art degree from the University of Utah, and her passion for painting continues to inspire her, especially during the summer months when she serves as a park ranger.
Over the years, Deer Valley has expanded significantly, growing from just 23 instructors at its inception to hundreds today. Lussier values the importance of camaraderie and connection among her colleagues. Despite missing the close-knit environment of the early years, she appreciates the support and resources that newer ownership has provided. "Many of my colleagues are like family, and I value that very highly," she expressed, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in their shared mission of teaching skiing.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Lussier's career has been witnessing the long-term relationships she has built with her students. Many return year after year, and she now finds herself skiing with the grandchildren of families she taught decades ago. "It’s a wonderful feeling to just know these people. You become sort of like family friends," she noted, reflecting on the deep connections that skiing fosters. Her extroverted nature makes meeting new people a joy, and she aims to inspire them to develop a love for skiing.
When teaching adult learners, Lussier emphasizes the importance of starting slowly and engaging in open communication. "I’m not a mind reader," she said, acknowledging that each learner has unique goals and aspirations. Effective communication is vital for creating a successful learning experience, and she encourages students to express their desires and fears openly. This two-way dialogue is essential for building trust and fostering a supportive environment.
Beyond teaching skiing techniques, Lussier hopes her students leave with a greater appreciation for the natural beauty surrounding them. "Skiing gets people who really don’t have the opportunity to be outside like that. It gives them a chance to connect and experience our wonderful landscape, our wonderful mountains," she explained. Her favorite moments on the mountain often involve nature’s wonders, such as watching snowflakes land on children’s gloves or observing a sun dog alongside her students. "Sometimes you can never repeat it," she said, capturing the fleeting beauty of the mountain experience.
As she celebrates 45 years at Deer Valley, Lussier is astounded by how quickly time has passed. "I’m grateful to have done this," she remarked, encouraging others to appreciate the beauty of their surroundings while skiing. She believes that too often, individuals become so focused on the activity that they forget to enjoy the environment. Lussier advocates for sharing those moments with loved ones, creating lasting memories that extend beyond the slopes.
In a world that often rushes forward, Letitia Lussier stands as a testament to the joy of skiing and the profound connections it creates. Her dedication to safety, confidence-building, and fostering an appreciation for nature ensures that her legacy will endure for generations of skiers at Deer Valley Resort and beyond.
