A candlelight vigil held at Pioneer Park in Salt Lake City on December 18, 2025, honored approximately 80 individuals who died while experiencing homelessness in the state. Herbert Elliot, co-chair of the consumer advisory board for the Fourth Street Clinic, read the names of the deceased, placing a stone in a jar for each person as a somber reminder of the lives lost. The event, part of an annual tradition, aimed to ensure these individuals are not forgotten. Attendees included those who knew some of the deceased, such as Darien Willardson, who reflected on his connections to two men on the list. Willardson, who leads outreach teams for the Rescue Mission, shared the story of James Owen Dennis, who recently passed away after battling cancer, and Rodney, who preferred living under a bridge to seeking shelter. The vigil underscored the struggles faced by the homeless community, with speakers emphasizing the need for more resources and compassion. Former Senate President Wayne Niederhauser spoke about the persistent lack of resources in addressing homelessness, calling for increased funding and support. Jarod Beardon, who once experienced homelessness, also shared his story. He emphasized the importance of treating homeless individuals with dignity and respect, urging the community to provide more support and understanding. The vigil concluded with a call to action, reminding attendees that progress has been made, but more needs to be done for Utah's homeless population. The event gathered over 100 participants, highlighting the community's commitment to honoring those lost and advocating for change.
