The Utah Outliers hockey team has opened their new rink at Black Rock Resort, attracting a large crowd for their debut game.

The Utah Outliers hockey team has officially opened their new home at the Black Rock Ice Rink, located at the Black Rock Mountain Resort. The rink welcomed a large crowd during their recent game against the Ogden Mustangs, showcasing the enthusiasm of local fans. The Outliers, comprised of players aged 17 to 20, compete in the Tier II Mountain Division of the National Collegiate Development Conference, which represents the highest level of amateur hockey in the United States. Founded in Salt Lake City in 2016, the team is coached by Richard Bohan.
Rich Wolper, the Outliers’ managing partner, is also the developer of the Black Rock Mountain Resort, which opened its doors to guests in 2021. The establishment of the ice rink was planned as the eventual home for the Outliers, who previously played at the Acord Center in West Valley City until the Black Rock Ice Rink was completed in late November.
The Outliers’ regular season consists of 53 games from September to March, competing against teams from Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. The playoffs in April will determine the champions of the Mountain, New England, and Atlantic divisions, who will then vie for the league-wide Dineen Cup title. Players come from various regions, both domestically and internationally, and live with local host families known as 'billets,' who provide support during the season.
The recent game featured a scoreless first period, but Ogden scored two goals in the second period, leading 2-1 at the end of the frame. The Outliers responded quickly with a goal from Sjur Ostbo. The third period saw Ogden extend their lead, ultimately winning the game 4-1. Following a 5-1 loss against the Mustangs, the Outliers' season record stands at 8 wins and 16 losses. Upcoming home games at Black Rock are scheduled for December 29 against the Grand Junction River Hawks, December 30 against the Rock Springs Miners, and January 3 against the Ogden Mustangs.
