ORLANDO (AP) Jovesa Damuni scored a 4-yard touchdown run with just two minutes left in the game, leading No. 12 BYU to a thrilling 25-21 comeback victory over No. 24 Georgia Tech in the Pop-Tarts Bowl on Saturday. BYU overcame an 11-point deficit in the second half to secure the win. Damuni's touchdown capped off a crucial nine-play, 70-yard drive orchestrated by freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier, who contributed 57 yards through the air during the drive. Bachmeier completed 27 of 38 passes for a total of 325 yards, including one touchdown and one interception, marking his third game of over 300 passing yards this season. The Cougars finished the game with a total of 426 yards of offense. Meanwhile, Georgia Tech's senior quarterback Haynes King had a chance to tie the game late in the fourth quarter. He connected with Eric Rivers for a 66-yard pass on a fourth-and-15 play, bringing the Yellow Jackets to the BYU 18-yard line with only 35 seconds remaining. On the following fourth down attempt, King aimed for Jamal Haynes in the end zone, but Evan Johnson of BYU intercepted the pass, sealing the victory for the Cougars. King ended the game with 23 completions on 41 attempts for 254 yards, two touchdowns, and the critical interception. The Yellow Jackets initially took a 14-10 lead late in the first half after a series of fast plays, including a touchdown pass from King to Rivers and a quick recovery of a fumbled kickoff. In addition, the game was characterized by struggles in the red zone, with BYU converting 4 of 6 opportunities but throwing an interception in the end zone during the third quarter. Georgia Tech, while starting strong, finished the game converting only 3 of 6 red zone attempts. King also made history during the game, setting a Georgia Tech record for career completions with 676, surpassing the previous record held by Reggie Ball. King also became the second player in the program's history to surpass 10,000 total yards, finishing his career with 10,184 yards of total offense. The game concluded with BYU celebrating its twelfth win of the season, marking their first 12-win season since 2001. Georgia Tech, in contrast, ended its season with disappointment, losing its final three games and missing out on both the ACC championship and the College Football Playoff. Looking ahead, Georgia Tech is scheduled to start its 2026 season at home against Colorado on September 5, while BYU will face Utah Tech at home on the same date.
