The excitement of fans and readiness of the ice will not culminate in a game for the Utah Grizzlies on Friday night. This postponement comes as the league and the players' union have failed to reach an agreement. The Grizzlies announced the postponement on social media, stating that the players' union's decision to stop work has necessitated the delay of the game against the Idaho Steelheads. The franchise is actively working to ensure a team is ready for their next scheduled match. The Professional Hockey Players' Association (PHPA) had previously announced a strike notice for its ECHL members, effective December 26, 2025, with the official notice delivered on December 18. Just two days prior, the ECHL presented what they termed their last, best, and final offer to the PHPA, but they received no feedback from the union. ECHL officials have expressed concerns that the union leaders did not submit the offer to a vote among their members. Issues raised by the union include restrictions on players' choices regarding helmet fit and the provision of used equipment by clubs. Additionally, players have voiced dissatisfaction with being told that long bus trips of nine hours are considered days off. In response, ECHL leadership has countered these claims, asserting that they have made multiple proposals to enhance player health and safety. These proposals include mandatory days off, improved travel conditions for back-to-back games, and adjustments to holiday and mid-season breaks. Furthermore, the ECHL has announced a significant salary cap increase of 19.8% for the current season, which will be retroactively applied upon ratification of the agreement. The situation remains fluid as both sides work to find a resolution that allows games to go on as scheduled.
