The Heber City community is supporting coach Patrick Dettman, diagnosed with ALS, by fundraising for a mobility van.
HEBER CITY, Utah - The Dettman family in Heber City is experiencing the holidays differently this year due to a significant health challenge. Patrick Dettman, a football coach at Wasatch High School, was diagnosed with ALS in August. His condition has progressively worsened over recent months, impacting his mobility. Derik Bringhurst, head coach of Wasatch High School football and a close friend of Patrick, noted the rapid changes in Patrick's mobility, stating they have gone from helping him step into a truck to needing to push him into it. Currently, Patrick relies on an electric wheelchair but lacks a suitable mobility van for easier transportation. A family friend, Casey Lewis, contacted Mountainland Auto Sales to assist in finding a mobility van. Shane Clegg, the owner of the dealership, expressed a commitment to helping, stating that a van had been located and they proceeded with the purchase. The van is expected to cost approximately $82,000, and the community has been asked for donations to support this effort. Mountainland Auto has already facilitated the purchase and set up a GoFundMe page for additional contributions. The mobility van will not only help transport Patrick to necessary medical appointments in Salt Lake City but also allow him to participate in everyday activities, such as enjoying holiday lights. The family is trying to focus on the positives, as highlighted by Patrick Dettman, who emphasized the importance of love and gratitude during this challenging time. His daughter, Allison Dettman, pointed out that despite the difficulties, the family has grown closer, expressing more affection and appreciation for one another. While Patrick may not be actively coaching or engaging in outdoor activities as he once did, he remains grateful for the support and love surrounding him this holiday season.
