Shelby sent me a text showing me a synthesizer, which turned out to be a kids' bow-and-arrow that you had to bite onto to make the sound." This unusual device utilized a contact microphone that picked up vibrations, allowing for a creative blend of sound that was both playful and innovative. "You can sing through it, but in order for the sound to get picked up, it has to go through your teeth," Shelby Gaines elaborated, demonstrating the instrument's unconventional nature. The Gaines brothers are known for their artistry in transforming found objects into musical instruments, an approach that adds a layer of authenticity to their work. "We make a lot of our instruments specifically for certain projects," Shelby noted, highlighting their commitment to craftsmanship. Another notable instrument used in the score was what Shelby referred to as a “Shovel,” a single-stringed instrument that produced sounds reminiscent of a cello and bass. He explained, "That instrument made a lot of appearances in the score. It felt like a single, tough sound that represented the protagonist." McKinley recounted his first meeting with Hawke while working on the drama series "Good Lord Bird." Their rapport blossomed quickly, leading to discussions about McKinley's vision for "The Weight." "Within the first 10 minutes, I knew we would be strong collaborators and good friends," he said. When it came time to develop the script, McKinley sought Hawke's advice on screenwriters, to which Hawke suggested Shelby Gaines, a multifaceted talent he described as a composer, sound designer, inventor, and the best writer he knew. "When I get a chance to write on something before I start thinking about the music, it mostly helps because you think about the characters and what’s going on inside of them," he explained.
