At the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, a captivating panel discussion at the ASCAP Music Café highlighted the creative collaboration behind the film "The Weight," directed by Padraic McKinley. The film, a Depression-era crime drama set against the backdrop of the Oregon backcountry, features acclaimed actors Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe. The most intriguing aspect of the panel was the discussion surrounding the film's score, crafted by composers Shelby and Latham Gaines, who are known for their inventive approach to music-making. During the lively discussion, McKinley and Shelby Gaines shared insights into the unconventional instruments used in the film's score. One standout was a unique synthesizer that resembled a child's toy bow-and-arrow. McKinley explained, "I wanted some synth in the score, reminiscent of William Friedkin’s 1977 film, ‘The Sorcerer’. Shelby sent me a text showing me a synthesizer, which turned out to be a kids' bow-and-arrow that you had to bite onto to make the sound." This unusual device utilized a contact microphone that picked up vibrations, allowing for a creative blend of sound that was both playful and innovative. "You can sing through it, but in order for the sound to get picked up, it has to go through your teeth," Shelby Gaines elaborated, demonstrating the instrument's unconventional nature. The Gaines brothers are known for their artistry in transforming found objects into musical instruments, an approach that adds a layer of authenticity to their work. "We make a lot of our instruments specifically for certain projects," Shelby noted, highlighting their commitment to craftsmanship. Another notable instrument used in the score was what Shelby referred to as a “Shovel,” a single-stringed instrument that produced sounds reminiscent of a cello and bass. He explained, "That instrument made a lot of appearances in the score. It felt like a single, tough sound that represented the protagonist." This protagonist, Sam Murphy, is portrayed by Ethan Hawke, who played a crucial role in connecting the creative team. McKinley recounted his first meeting with Hawke while working on the drama series "Good Lord Bird." Their rapport blossomed quickly, leading to discussions about McKinley's vision for "The Weight." "Within the first 10 minutes, I knew we would be strong collaborators and good friends," he said. When it came time to develop the script, McKinley sought Hawke's advice on screenwriters, to which Hawke suggested Shelby Gaines, a multifaceted talent he described as a composer, sound designer, inventor, and the best writer he knew. The film explores profound themes, particularly the relationship between a father and daughter amid the struggles of desperation and hope. McKinley described the film’s core narrative: "It’s about the drive of the father to get his daughter back." This emotional depth is echoed in the score, which Gaines felt was enhanced by his involvement in the scriptwriting process. "When I get a chance to write on something before I start thinking about the music, it mostly helps because you think about the characters and what’s going on inside of them," he explained. Gaines highlighted the collaborative nature of the project, noting that he worked closely with McKinley and screenwriters Matthew Booi and Matthew Chapman. Although there were moments of creative tension, such as when a suggested musical piece didn't quite fit, both men emphasized the importance of open dialogue. McKinley remarked, "Shelby saw things from a different place than I did, but because he and his brother invent the instruments, they have an emotional connection to what they play." This synergy allowed for a creative process that was both fulfilling and productive. The collaborative spirit extended to the music's placement within the film. Instead of the traditional method where composers fit music to scenes post-filming, Gaines proposed creating a variety of music pieces from which McKinley could select. This approach drew inspiration from Tangerine Dream's score for "The Sorcerer," which provided a 90-minute album for Friedkin to utilize, allowing for a more organic integration of sound. As the film neared completion, McKinley recognized the vital role that sound plays in storytelling. He noted that music could convey emotions that dialogue or visuals might not fully capture. "Music explains the tertiary emotion, giving viewers something that dialogue or scenery isn't doing," he explained. With the film's first piece of music introduced within the first 12 minutes, McKinley aimed for a striking sonic impact, utilizing the unique sounds created by the Gaines brothers to set the film's tone. In the film's test screenings, audiences responded to the score's ability to evoke feelings of dread early on, a testament to its effectiveness in enhancing the narrative. McKinley hopes that viewers will appreciate how the music aligns with the film's emotional journey. "There’s a grittiness and darkness that is really important to the film," he said, underscoring the score's integral role. The collaboration between McKinley and the Gaines brothers stands as a testament to the power of authenticity in filmmaking. "Don’t be afraid to say I want to try it my way," Gaines advised aspiring artists, emphasizing the importance of individual creativity in the industry. For McKinley, the experience reinforced the notion of perseverance in filmmaking, a lesson he hopes to impart to others. "You’ve just got to keep going," he said, reflecting on the six-year journey to bring "The Weight" to life. The film is set to have in-person screenings on February 1 at the Rose Wagner Center, and details can be found on the Sundance Festival website. With its innovative score and compelling narrative, "The Weight" promises to resonate deeply with audiences, showcasing the extraordinary collaboration of its creative team.
