Park City's Red Varsity Miners dominate Farmington with a 14-1 victory, advancing to the second round of the high school hockey playoffs.
SALT LAKE VALLEY, Utah — In an impressive display of skill and teamwork, the Park City High School Red Varsity Miners hockey team triumphed over Farmington High in the first round of the Utah affiliated playoffs on Monday night. The game, held at the Acord Ice Center in West Valley City, ended with a staggering score of 14-1, showcasing the Miners' dominant performance throughout the match.
With this victory, the Miners concluded their regular season with a remarkable overall record of 13 wins and just 1 loss. Right from the start, Park City established their dominance, finishing the first period with an emphatic 6-1 lead. By the end of the second period, they had increased their advantage to 9-1, ultimately sealing the game at 14-1. Despite the lopsided score, the athletes from Park City displayed commendable sportsmanship, simply shaking hands with their opponents after the final whistle, eschewing any exuberant celebrations.
Highlighting the Miners' performance was senior co-captain Hunter Hutchison, who scored a spectacular slap-shot goal during the second period. This goal was part of a commanding offensive display, with Park City registering 26 shots on goal compared to Farmington's mere five. Hutchison, who also excelled in lacrosse and golf during his time at Park City High, plans to continue playing club hockey after graduation and is currently in the process of finalizing his college choice.
In addition to Hutchison, fellow co-captain Hunter Jaques also made headlines by scoring a hat-trick in the playoff game. Jaques, like Hutchison, has been a key contributor to the team's success this season. The Miners' roster also features assistant captains Mitchell Berry and Charlie Cusimano, both seniors. Cusimano has already signed to play college football, indicating a bright future ahead for him in athletics.
Other notable seniors on the team include Alex Harhi, Brockton Umstead, Chris Biglow, Conner Richardson, Harper Brent, Luke Stocker, and Nikolas Morgan. Among them, Umstead, who plays center, shared insights into his experiences with the team. Currently working at a local ski resort during the school holiday break, he mentioned, "Playing hockey for the Miners is really fun, my senior year has been amazing. We have a good record and great athletes with zero selfishness among the teammates." After graduation, Umstead will be attending Northeastern University in Boston, where he plans to continue playing club hockey.
A unique aspect of Umstead's athletic background is his involvement in the Paralympic community. This February, he will head to the Milan Cortina 2026 Paralympics, where he will support his parents, both of whom are multi-medalists in alpine skiing. His commitment to both hockey and family exemplifies the dedication and passion that permeates the Miners' program.
Looking ahead, the Park City Miners are set to face their next challenge in round two of the playoffs on Monday night, January 12, at the Salt Lake City Sports Complex. The team will be aiming to defend their state title, which they earned last year after a decisive victory over Brighton in the finals. Over the past five years, the Miners have clinched the Utah Championships three times, solidifying their reputation as a powerhouse in high school hockey.
As the playoffs continue, the Miners remain focused and determined. Their successful run this season not only reflects their talent on the ice but also the strong camaraderie and sportsmanship that the team embodies. With a roster filled with skilled players and a supportive coaching staff, the Park City Miners are poised to make another deep playoff run, continuing their legacy in Utah high school hockey.
