BOISE, Idaho (AP) - In a high-scoring encounter, Washington State defeated Utah State 34-21 to claim victory in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl at Albertsons Stadium. Zevi Eckhaus showcased his skills by throwing for a season-high 334 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Cougars to a total of 628 yards of offense. Eckhaus completed 26 of 44 passes but was also intercepted three times during the game. The win improved Washington State's record to 7-6 for the season. Both the Cougars and the Aggies, who finished at 6-7, will compete in the revamped Pac-12 Conference next season, along with host school Boise State. Maxwell Woods made a significant contribution to the Cougars' offense, rushing nine times for 117 yards, marking the first instance this season of a Cougar surpassing the 100-yard rushing mark. Following the departure of their third head coach in three seasons, Jesse Bobbitt stepped in as interim head coach during the bowl game. Jimmy Rogers left for Iowa State after just one season, while Jake Dickert had departed for Wake Forest prior to Rogers' arrival. Looking ahead, Washington State has hired Kirby Moore, formerly of Missouri, as their head coach for the next season. The scoring began with Eckhaus throwing a 41-yard touchdown pass to freshman Mackenzie Alleyne, giving the Cougars an early 7-0 lead after the first quarter. Despite throwing interceptions on the next two drives, the Aggies could not capitalize on these opportunities. Eckhaus extended the lead to 14-0 with a 1-yard touchdown pass to junior tight end Hudson Cedarland in the second quarter. Cedarland had entered the game with only one career catch for four yards. Field goals by Stevens in the third quarter provided Washington State with a 20-0 lead before Bryson Barnes managed to score on a 2-yard keeper, narrowing the gap to 20-7 as the game moved into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, Eckhaus connected with Landon Wright for a 39-yard touchdown pass, showcasing the depth of the receiving corps as 12 different receivers caught at least one pass during the game. Backup quarterback Julian Dugger added to the score with a 34-yard rushing touchdown with four minutes left. For Utah State, quarterback Bryson Barnes recorded 116 yards on 9-for-21 passing before being sidelined due to a hard hit in the second half. Backup Jacob Conover completed 5 of 7 passes for 78 yards, with two touchdown throws in the fourth quarter to Brady Boyd and Javen Jacobs. This victory marked Washington State's first postseason win since defeating Iowa State 28-26 in the 2018 Alamo Bowl.
