Utah Increases DUI Patrols and Promotes Safe Rides for Holidays
Utah is increasing DUI patrols and promoting a sober ride campaign for the holidays.

UTAH — The Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) is ramping up traffic enforcement during the holiday season to deter impaired driving. In collaboration with the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Service and WCF Insurance, the campaign encourages residents to 'Make it home for the holidays — plan a sober ride.' This initiative emphasizes safe methods for getting home when under the influence.
As part of this effort, DPS and its partners are offering a $10 Lyft ride credit available statewide throughout December. Residents can access this credit via QR codes located in DABS liquor stores and participating bars.
From December 10 to January 1, 2026, the Utah Highway Patrol and local law enforcement agencies will be conducting over 250 additional DUI enforcement shifts across the state. According to DPS statistics, alcohol-related crashes in Utah are 15 times more likely to result in fatalities compared to other types of crashes. Furthermore, drug-related fatalities made up 42% of all traffic deaths from 2020 to 2024, while alcohol-related fatalities accounted for 18% during the same period. In 2025 alone, there have been 10,923 DUI arrests in Utah, averaging 30 arrests each day.
DPS has provided several safety tips for residents to ensure a secure holiday season. These include making arrangements for a safe ride home before engaging in holiday festivities, taking control of the keys from anyone who is impaired, and adhering to Utah’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit of 0.05, which means impairment can begin with the first drink. Utilizing ride-share and taxi services is recommended to keep impaired individuals and others safe. Additionally, wearing a seatbelt is highlighted as a crucial defense against impaired drivers.
