Utah is known for its distinctive nightlife, but visitors often find themselves confused by the state's conservative liquor laws. One common surprise is that grocery stores cannot sell beer with an alcohol by volume (ABV) greater than 5%. Understanding these laws will help avoid awkward situations in restaurants and bars. In Utah, the classification of establishments is crucial when it comes to alcohol service. Restaurants and bars are considered separate entities under the law. While many bars serve food and many restaurants have bars, the rules regarding drink orders depend on the classification of the venue. In restaurants, alcoholic beverages can only be served if food is also present at the table. This means that diners might experience a delay in receiving their drinks unless they order appetizers first. Conversely, bars have fewer restrictions on alcohol service. Guests must be over 21 and present a valid ID to enter. It’s important for everyone in the group to bring identification, as even older individuals will be required to show proof of age. One notable restriction in Utah bars is that bartenders are not allowed to mix drinks containing more than 2.5 ounces of alcohol. Despite this limit, local bartenders are skilled at creating cocktails that comply with the law, but patrons should not expect large pours. For those hosting gatherings in need of alcohol, the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services (DABS) operates state-run liquor stores where patrons can purchase beer, wine, and liquor with an ABV over 5%. However, liquor exceeding 80% ABV, such as Everclear, is prohibited in Utah. In the Park City area, there are three DABS liquor stores: 1. DABS Utah State Liquor Store #36 – 460 Swede Alley 2. DABS Utah State Liquor Store #37 – 1612 Ute Boulevard 3. DABS Utah State Liquor Store #38 – 1550 Snow Creek Drive These stores generally operate from 11 AM to 10 PM and are closed on Sundays and most holidays, so planning ahead is advisable.
