The Sundance Film Festival's last year in Utah features a Legacy Program celebrating its history and notable films.
The Sundance Film Festival, a staple of Utah's cultural landscape for over 40 years, is set to conclude its Park City tradition after the 2026 festival. As this year's festival marks the last before its relocation to Boulder, CO, numerous events have been organized to honor its history and significance in the state.
A highlight of this year's festival is the Park City Legacy Program, which features anniversary screenings, discussions led by festival alumni, and a significant culmination event. This program is scheduled from January 27-30.
In tribute to Robert Redford, the founder of the Sundance Institute, the Legacy Program will include a screening of his 1969 film, Downhill Racer. This film played a crucial role in establishing the Sundance Institute and will be part of various gatherings celebrating Redford's contributions. Other events include a celebration in Salt Lake City, a Directors Brunch at Sundance Mountain Resort, and a fundraising event titled "Celebrating Sundance Institute: A Tribute to Robert Redford."
The fundraiser will be held at the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley, honoring Redford’s founding efforts. During this event, the inaugural Robert Redford Luminary Award will be presented to Ed Harris and Gyula Gazdag for their significant contributions to the film industry.
The Legacy Program also includes screenings of notable films that have shaped the festival's legacy, such as American Dream, Half Nelson, Little Miss Sunshine, and Saw. Many of these films have undergone 4K restoration for this festival.
Additionally, the Legacy Program will host discussions as part of the Beyond Film series, bringing together Sundance Institute alumni to reflect on the festival's impact on storytelling and cinema. The final event will take place on January 30, celebrating the festival's host city and the community's role in its success.
For those attending, various ticket packages are available, catering to both in-person and online audiences. These packages include options for locals, young adults, and unlimited screenings in Salt Lake City, ensuring accessibility for a wide range of festival-goers.
