The Sundance Institute has unveiled its 2026 honorees for the Trailblazer and Vanguard Awards, set to be presented at the annual fundraiser, Celebrating Sundance Institute: A Tribute to Founder Robert Redford, on January 23, 2026. The event will take place at the Grand Hyatt in Deer Valley, Utah, coinciding with the Sundance Film Festival, which runs from January 22 to February 1, 2026.
Chloé Zhao, acclaimed filmmaker known for her Oscar-winning film 'Nomadland,' will receive the Trailblazer Award Presented by Google. This prestigious award recognizes Zhao for her significant contributions and unwavering dedication to independent filmmaking. Previous recipients of this award include notable directors such as Christopher Nolan and James Mangold.
Zhao’s career began with her debut feature 'Songs My Brothers Taught Me' in 2015, which was developed with support from the Sundance Institute’s Directors Lab. Her recent work includes directing and co-writing 'Hamnet' (2025), a highly anticipated adaptation of the bestselling novel.
Nia DaCosta, the director of 'Hedda' (2025) and 'Candyman' (2021), will be honored with the Vanguard Award for Fiction. This award honors emerging filmmakers who demonstrate innovation and creative independence in storytelling. DaCosta has been recognized for her impactful approach to horror and suspense, with her debut feature gaining traction within the Sundance community.
Geeta Gandbhir will receive the Vanguard Award for Nonfiction for her work as a director. Her documentary 'The Perfect Neighbor' premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and won the Jury Award for Directing in the U.S. Documentary category. Gandbhir has a wealth of experience, winning numerous accolades for her contributions to documentary filmmaking.
Alongside the award ceremony, the event will celebrate Robert Redford’s legacy and the supportive environment he fostered for independent artists through the Sundance Institute. Special guests at the event will include prominent figures such as Ava DuVernay, Ethan Hawke, and Tessa Thompson, enhancing the occasion's significance as a tribute to storytelling.
The 2026 Sundance Film Festival will include both in-person screenings in Park City and Salt Lake City, as well as an online program available to audiences nationwide.
