Provo police have taken a 20-year-old man into custody following allegations of sexual assault occurring inside a Family Dollar store. Simon Maxwell Evans, who was arrested on Saturday, faces multiple charges including voyeurism, interfering with a peace officer, possession of a controlled substance, and sexual battery. According to court documents, authorities responded to a report of a sexual assault at the Family Dollar located at 2118 West Center Street. The victim, a 42-year-old woman, described the incident, stating that while shopping, an unknown man approached her from behind and inappropriately touched her. The woman reacted quickly, following the suspect outside the store while capturing images and videos of him and his vehicle. Using the provided evidence, officers were able to identify Evans as the suspect. Following this, Utah County Sheriff's Deputies made contact with him at his residence. Reports indicate that during the interaction, Evans repeatedly reached into his pockets despite being instructed not to. When deputies attempted to detain him, he allegedly resisted their efforts. A THC vape pen and an iPhone were discovered in Evans's pockets. Investigators later found video footage on the iPhone that depicted Evans approaching the victim and committing the alleged assault. The police continue to investigate the case, and Evans is currently facing serious charges as the legal process unfolds.
