Provo Canyon will close overnight for blasting and excavation work this weekend, affecting traffic.
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has announced significant delays on U.S. 189 in Provo Canyon this Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, with a complete nighttime closure from Saturday night to Sunday morning. This is part of the ongoing U.S. 189 expansion project.
On Thursday, crews will temporarily close U.S. 189 between Main Canyon Road in Wallsburg and the intersection with S.R. 113 in Charleston from 10:00 to 10:50 a.m. for controlled blasting. The work involves clearing a section of the hillside to construct new northbound lanes. UDOT has indicated that more blasting is expected in January.
Following Thursday’s activities, crews will begin lane closures in the same stretch starting at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, leading to a complete closure of U.S. 189 from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. on Sunday for excavation work. After the overnight closure, traffic will be directed in a single lane with flagger control until 9:00 a.m.
Due to the nighttime closure and the extended period of alternating traffic, UDOT advises drivers to adjust their travel schedules or seek alternate routes on Thursday, Saturday night, and Sunday morning.
The construction of new lanes along the mountainside is a critical aspect of the U.S. 189 Improvement project, aimed at enhancing access and safety for travelers around Deer Creek Reservoir. Once the new northbound lanes are completed, crews will shift traffic to the new roadway and begin work on the southbound lanes in the summer of 2026.
Additionally, drivers should be aware of other scheduled work in the state this week:
- For Legacy Parkway northbound in Farmington, the ramp to I-15 north (exit 13) will be closed on Thursday from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Friday. Drivers should use Park Lane (exit 12) to access I-15 north while crews work on a pedestrian bridge.
- I-15 northbound in Farmington will also see closures on Friday from 9:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Saturday between U.S. 89 (exit 324) and Park Lane (exit 325) for pedestrian bridge work. All traffic will be redirected to U.S. 89.
- Expect delays on eastbound Interstate 84 in Weber Canyon on Sunday from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Monday, as the road will narrow to one lane for bridge work.
