Three Park City High School athletes commit to Ivy League schools, showcasing a blend of talent and academic ambition.
In a remarkable display of talent and academic ambition, three standout athletes from Park City High School have made their commitments to prestigious East Coast universities, further solidifying the school’s reputation for fostering both athletic prowess and scholarly excellence. During a college athletics commitment ceremony held on January 30, football kicker Tanner Pidwell, track and field star Sierra Darling, and volleyball player Sabine Smith announced their decisions to compete at Dartmouth, Yale, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), respectively.
Tanner Pidwell has been a pivotal player for the Miners football team over the past two seasons, serving as both the starting kicker and punter. This past fall, his exceptional performance earned him a spot on the Deseret News’ all-state second team for punting. Pidwell expressed his enthusiasm for attending Dartmouth, indicating that the combination of a strong academic environment and opportunities in football played a crucial role in his decision. "I have a strong interest in academics and wanted to go to a strong school," Pidwell remarked, emphasizing the importance of his educational pursuit alongside athletics.
As Pidwell looks forward to his time at Dartmouth, he is also keen on making an immediate impact on the field. "I am likely to be the starter for three-plus years," he reflected, noting that he has seen peers choose larger programs only to spend considerable time on the bench. His academic aspirations do not end with his undergraduate degree; he plans to pursue a fifth season of college football at a larger program while attending graduate school. Pidwell expressed gratitude towards his family, coaches, and mentors, stating, "I would like to thank my family first, who supported me 100% through everything. I hope to make a meaningful impact and represent Park City on the field and in the classroom."
Sierra Darling, celebrating her own commitment to Yale, echoed Pidwell's sentiments about the importance of balancing athletics with academics. Darling has been a standout in track and field, contributing to Park City’s state title-winning relay teams in the 4x100m and 4x400m races in 2025, and achieving a third-place finish in the 400m at the 4A classification. The opportunity to sign alongside friends who share her dedication to both sports and education was particularly poignant for her. "It’s crazy to see this dream come true for both of us," Darling said, referencing her long-standing friendship with Smith.
After considering multiple options, including the Air Force Academy, Darling ultimately chose Yale for its unique offerings. "Yale prides itself on being a place where people choose ‘and’ instead of having to choose ‘or,’ which really resonated with me," she explained. With aspirations to engage in various passions, including ROTC and academics, Darling is eager to contribute to the vibrant campus life in New Haven. She shared her excitement, stating, "I’m so excited and honored to represent Park City and the amazing team of coaches that supported me through everything."
As she prepares for the transition, Darling acknowledges the bittersweet nature of leaving her hometown and the support network she has built. "It’s difficult to imagine being across the country separated from everyone in my corner now," she admitted. Throughout her journey, she has credited her family and coaches for their unwavering support, particularly thanking her coach Dave Yocum for introducing her to the sport that has shaped her future. "I hope I don’t forget anyone because I’m so grateful for everyone who has helped my dreams come true," she said, expressing heartfelt appreciation for her support system.
Sabine Smith, the third athlete to commit, has also made waves in the volleyball circuit, helping lead the Miners to their fourth consecutive regional title last October. Her commitment to MIT is a testament to her dedication to both sports and academic excellence. The ceremony highlighted not only the individual achievements of these athletes but also the collective success of Park City High School’s athletic programs.
The commitment ceremony was a celebratory occasion, attended by family, friends, and coaches who have played instrumental roles in the athletes' journeys. Five additional Park City High athletes also announced their commitments to various collegiate programs in baseball and football, marking a significant moment for the school community.
As these three athletes prepare to embark on their collegiate journeys, they carry with them the pride of their hometown and the support of their families and coaches. Their achievements serve as an inspiring reminder of the potential that lies in balancing sports with education, making a mark not only in athletics but also in academia. Park City High School continues to bolster its reputation as a breeding ground for young talents who excel in multiple arenas, setting a strong example for future generations of student-athletes.
