Mary Beth Maziarz premiered her musical, 'Flo! The Show!', at the Egyptian YouTheatre in Park City. This marked her first musical endeavor, inspired by a children's book authored by Larry Gilbert. Maziarz, who has decades of experience in the music industry, discovered her passion for music early in life, taking various gigs during her time at Northwestern University. While she studied American culture, she thrived in an artistic environment, leading her to pursue a music career post-graduation. Maziarz moved to Park City, a place she had never visited before, and spent approximately ten years performing at the Riverhorse on Main.
Throughout her career, Maziarz has contributed original music to indie labels and collaborated with major companies like EMI in Nashville and Sony in New York. Her songwriting credits include popular TV shows such as 'Dawson’s Creek,' 'Joan of Arcadia,' and 'Party of Five.' Additionally, she authored a book titled 'Kick-Ass Creativity.' Her connection with Larry Gilbert began when he sought her guidance for creative coaching. Initially aiming to write a business book, their collaboration evolved into a children's story focused on authentic happiness.
About 18 months ago, Maziarz was inspired to write a song about Flo, the main character of Gilbert's book. This song sparked a series of compositions that ultimately formed the basis of a musical. She pitched her idea to Randy Barton, who directed her to Jamie Wilcox, the director of the Egyptian YouTheatre program. An impromptu presentation to Amy Livingston, director of education and media content, resulted in enthusiastic support for the project. The cast featured local students from fifth grade to high school, with Maziarz serving as co-director.
The world premiere of 'Flo! The Show!' took place over the first two weekends of December. The musical introduces Flo, a quokka known for its cheerful disposition, as a joyful way to celebrate the holiday season. For more information about Mary Beth Maziarz, visit www.marybethmusic.com.
