A 39-year-old man, identified as Michael James Torp, is facing multiple charges after allegedly attempting to strike Iron County Sheriff's Deputies with golf clubs while trying to evade arrest. The incident began on Saturday night when a trooper with the Utah Highway Patrol attempted to pull over a white Dodge Ram. It was during this stop that authorities discovered Torp had an active arrest warrant for possession of marijuana from Washington County. Despite the attempt to stop him, Torp reportedly fled the scene. On Sunday evening at approximately 8:00 p.m., another trooper spotted a vehicle believed to belong to Torp entering a Maverik parking lot in Cedar City. Troopers quickly blocked the vehicle in and requested additional backup. As Torp and his passengers returned to the truck, deputies exited their vehicles and issued commands to the group. However, Torp allegedly went to the bed of his truck and retrieved two golf clubs, preparing to resist arrest. According to deputies, Torp began swinging the golf clubs at them in an effort to avoid capture. Several troopers attempted to subdue Torp using tasers, but these efforts were reportedly unsuccessful. The situation escalated until a K9 unit arrived on the scene. It was only after the K9's presence that Torp surrendered and complied with the deputies' commands. Upon searching Torp's vehicle, law enforcement officials discovered a marijuana pipe containing marijuana residue. As a result of the incident, Michael James Torp is now facing charges that include assault on a peace officer, interfering with a peace officer, and possession of a controlled substance, among others. He is currently being held without bail as the case continues to unfold.
