Former Summit County Council Chair Malena Stevens has announced her candidacy for Summit County Clerk in the 2026 elections. This decision follows current Clerk Eve Furse's announcement that she will not seek re-election. Stevens emphasizes her commitment to election integrity and transparent governance.
Malena Stevens, the former chair of the Summit County Council, has officially declared her candidacy for the position of Summit County Clerk in the upcoming 2026 elections. This announcement comes on the same day that current County Clerk Eve Furse revealed she will not seek re-election next fall.
In her campaign announcement, Stevens underscored her extensive experience in government and a strong commitment to ensuring the integrity and transparency of elections and public records. 'The Clerk’s Office is one of the most important operational roles in county government,' Stevens stated. 'It requires accuracy, transparency, and consistent and fair processes—especially in times when public trust is crucial.' She expressed her belief that Summit County deserves a clerk who comprehensively understands governmental operations and can assume leadership immediately.
Stevens boasts four years of service on the Summit County Council, along with a tenure on the Snyderville Basin Planning Commission. During her time in these roles, she has been involved in addressing complex and often controversial issues, collaborating with county staff, state agencies, and legislators, all while navigating the legal frameworks and public processes relevant to her work.
Stevens emphasized that election integrity transcends political considerations, focusing instead on procedural correctness. 'The clerk’s responsibility is to administer elections lawfully, securely, and transparently, communicating clearly with voters about the processes involved. Trust is derived from competence and consistency,' she remarked.
As she campaigns for the Clerk’s Office, Stevens outlined key priorities she aims to focus on if elected:
1. Administer elections in full compliance with state law.
2. Ensure the security of ballots, records, and election systems.
3. Foster clear communication with voters and election personnel.
4. Maintain a standard of impartiality and professionalism.
5. Promote transparency and open governance.
Stevens described her leadership philosophy as collaborative yet accountable, asserting her commitment to careful listening and informed decision-making, even when faced with challenges. 'Public service is not about gaining attention or showcasing ideologies; it’s about performing the duties effectively and honoring the institution of public service,' she noted.
A resident of Pinebrook, Stevens has lived in Summit County for 14 years and has dedicated over a decade to local government initiatives. 'I care deeply about this community,' she concluded, expressing her desire to continue her public service as the Summit County Clerk.
