On Friday, a high-speed pursuit was initiated by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office after a driver allegedly ran a stop sign in eastern Summit County. Deputies, who were responding to the situation, activated their patrol vehicle's flashers to signal the driver for assistance. Instead of stopping, the driver accelerated, disregarded the stop sign, and ignored the lights and sirens from law enforcement. The chase began on Main Street in Coalville but was quickly called off due to adverse weather conditions once the driver entered Interstate 80. The vehicle was later identified when the driver reportedly cut off a semi-truck near Castle Rock. Law enforcement attempted another traffic stop by deploying spike strips, but the driver continued for an additional three miles. The situation was eventually resolved when deputies executed a precision immobilization technique (PIT maneuver) to disable the vehicle safely. Following the stop, the driver was arrested and charged with various traffic offenses and drug-related charges. In addition to the pursuit, the Sheriff’s Office reported responding to several other incidents during the week of December 15 to December 21. On December 18, deputies attempted to stop a vehicle on Ute Boulevard for a traffic violation. After the car stopped, the driver allegedly discarded an item through the passenger window before fleeing westbound onto I-80. The driver lost control near mile marker 134 and crashed into a cluster of trees, approximately 200 feet from the road. After fleeing on foot, K-9 teams successfully located and apprehended the individual. In another incident, deputies stopped a car on S.R. 224 for a registration violation. Upon identifying the driver, they discovered he was required to have an ignition interlock device, which was not installed. The driver was arrested and taken to the Summit County Jail. Furthermore, a driver who failed to stop at the intersection of Ute Boulevard and S.R. 224 exhibited signs of intoxication during a traffic stop. After performing poorly on field sobriety tests, the individual was booked into jail for suspected DUI and related traffic violations. On December 15, deputies stopped a vehicle in Kimball Junction for multiple traffic violations. During the encounter, the driver spat on a deputy, resulting in an arrest for suspected DUI and assault on a peace officer, alongside additional traffic citations.
