Park City Film concludes its Robert Redford tribute with 'A River Runs Through It' screening on December 26.
Park City Film will conclude its tribute to the late Robert Redford, founder of the Sundance Institute, with a free screening of the 1992 film 'A River Runs Through It' on December 26 at 4 p.m. The event will take place at the Park City Library’s Jim Santy Auditorium. This initiative, which has been ongoing since October, aims to celebrate Redford’s legacy in independent film and storytelling.
Since 1995, Park City Film has been influenced by Redford's work, particularly through the Sundance Film Festival. Katharine Wang, executive director of Park City Film, emphasized that the organization exists because of Redford’s contributions to independent cinema. 'A River Runs Through It' is based on a book by Norman Maclean and portrays the relationship between two brothers, played by Brad Pitt and Craig Sheffer, in a rural town during the early 20th century.
Although Redford does not appear in the film, he directed and narrated it, lending his recognizable voice to enhance the storytelling. The film, which was pivotal in launching Brad Pitt’s career, showcases themes of family and the love for fly fishing.
The tribute series was initiated by Jackie Zehner of the Jacquelyn And Gregory Zehner Foundation, who sought to honor Redford’s impact on the film industry. The series featured lesser-known films from Redford’s career, allowing audiences to explore a broader spectrum of his work. Titles included 'The Sting' and 'All the President’s Men,' deliberately chosen to avoid overlap with other tributes planned for Redford.
'All the President’s Men,' directed by Alan J. Pakula, stars Redford and Dustin Hoffman as journalists investigating the Watergate scandal. Wang noted the relevance of this film in today's political climate.
The screening of 'A River Runs Through It' will be free to the public, making it accessible to the community. The event aims to bring together audiences to celebrate Redford’s contributions and legacy as the 2026 Sundance Film Festival approaches.
