The North Pole Express offers a magical holiday experience with train rides, festive treats, and visits from Santa Claus.
For 13 years, the Weyer family from Green River, Wyoming, has traveled to Heber City to enjoy the North Pole Express on the Heber Creeper. This family tradition started when granddaughter Katie Fryer wanted an authentic 'Polar Express' experience for her then 2-year-old son, who is now 15, along with his 2-month-old sister who joined this year. The train ride features hot cocoa, cookies, singing, and a visit from Santa Claus. Train host Brooke Thatcher engages passengers with festive activities and humor, making the experience enjoyable for all ages.
Lawrence Weyer, the great-grandfather, recalls his childhood train trips in Montana, sharing his love for railroads through winter jigsaw puzzles. Each year, the North Pole Express offers slight variations to its program, keeping it fresh. Last year, a surprise Elvis impersonator added a unique element to the ride, though he didn’t return this year due to availability issues.
The Heber Valley Railroad, which operates the North Pole Express, has been in service for 126 years and employs around 190 young 'elves' for the holiday season. Each trip accommodates approximately 600 passengers, running from a week before Thanksgiving to December 30. The railroad's offerings also include themed rides like 'Pirates and Princesses' and various other seasonal experiences.
This year's highlight is a newly restored silver dome car from 1948, providing an enhanced experience with panoramic views of the scenic Provo Canyon. The magical moment occurs when the train passes by a beautifully decorated North Pole, where Santa greets the excited children.
Assistant director Parker Wilson emphasizes the importance of this beloved community event, highlighting the commitment of the young staff and their dedication to creating memorable experiences for families. The North Pole Express continues to be the railroad's most sought-after ride, with tickets selling out quickly each year. As the holiday season approaches, the North Pole Express remains a cherished tradition for many families in the region.
