Driver Arrested for DUI After Wrong-Way Incident on I-80 Christmas Morning
A driver was arrested for DUI after traveling the wrong way on I-80 early Christmas morning, raising safety concerns.

Early on Christmas morning, a wrong-way driver was reported traveling over 10 miles on Interstate 80, posing a significant risk to other motorists. The incident began at approximately 3:19 a.m. when the Utah Highway Patrol received calls about a vehicle driving against traffic near mile marker 99, close to Tooele. A trooper quickly responded to the scene and successfully located the driver, who was heading eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-80, just west of Salt Lake City International Airport.
Thanks to the swift action of the trooper, the driver was stopped without any physical contact between vehicles. Fortunately, no injuries or accidents were reported in connection with this dangerous incident. Following the stop, the trooper administered a field sobriety test to the unidentified driver. The results of the test led to the driver’s arrest for driving under the influence (DUI).
This incident comes amid a series of wrong-way driving occurrences in Utah, which have raised concerns among law enforcement and the public. Notably, there was a tragic accident last month involving a wrong-way driver on I-15, which resulted in the deaths of two teenagers. Despite these alarming events, statistics indicate that wrong-way crashes have decreased in Utah this year compared to previous years. This trend offers a glimmer of hope, suggesting that public awareness and law enforcement efforts may be having a positive impact on road safety.
Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of responsible driving and urge anyone who sees a vehicle operating recklessly or in the wrong direction to report it immediately. The Utah Highway Patrol remains vigilant in monitoring the roads and ensuring the safety of all motorists, particularly during busy holiday periods when traffic tends to increase. As this Christmas incident highlights, quick action by law enforcement can prevent potential tragedies on the road.
