David Breslauer, featured in an ongoing series about Park City photographers, initially discovered his passion for photography through journalism. With 15 years of experience at the Associated Press and two daily newspapers, he took a break from photography after leaving the news industry. Upon relocating to Utah, he was inspired by a trip to Zion National Park to resume his practice, transitioning to digital photography and rediscovering techniques he had learned as a film photographer. Breslauer's photojournalism background contributed to his success at the Intermountain Professional Photographer Association's 2025 photography competition, where he secured second place in the nature and wildlife category with his image titled 'Ground Clearance.' This striking black-and-white photograph captures a bald eagle in Alaska just before landing on the snow, showcasing the bird's feathers and wings in a moment of momentum. The photograph was taken during a trip he made with fellow Park City Photography Club member Howard Meltzer to Homer, Alaska, which is known for its wintering eagles due to its unfrozen waters and active fishing port. Breslauer noted that the area is teeming with eagles, making it an ideal location for bird photography. To photograph birds effectively, Breslauer emphasizes the need to predict their behavior and be prepared to adjust his skills accordingly. He explained that capturing an exceptional bird photograph is challenging due to the variety of skills required, making 'Ground Clearance' a noteworthy accomplishment. The image features a sharply focused eagle against the snow, highlighting the intricate details of its eye and feathers. Over five days, Breslauer and Meltzer took approximately 45,000 photos, underscoring the extensive effort involved in selecting and editing the best images. The Park City Photography Club, which Breslauer helps organize, serves as a supportive community for photographers of all skill levels. Monthly meetings include guest speakers and themed discussions on photography topics. The club also organizes trips, including an upcoming visit to the Palouse region and a symposium in Moab next year. Through these activities, members aim to enhance their photography skills and share their passion for capturing extraordinary moments.
