CENTERVILLE, Utah — A significant milestone was marked in Centerville as Vicky Veater, a long-time crossing guard, officially retired after serving for over three decades. Veater dedicated her time to ensuring the safety of children crossing the street near J.A. Taylor Elementary School. On her last day, she donned a Christmas elf costume and shared treats with students, receiving warm farewells in the form of hugs and high-fives. Veater expressed that while her time as a crossing guard has been fulfilling, she feels it is the right moment to transition into a new chapter of her life. She plans to travel more and enjoy her free time without the responsibility of finding a substitute. Centerville Police Chief Allen Ackerson noted the bittersweet nature of Veater's departure, recognizing her unwavering commitment to her role in all weather conditions. Principal Darryl Denhalter of Taylor Elementary also expressed his appreciation for Veater's dedication to the safety and care of the children. Neighbors, like Vanessa Love, highlighted the community connections Veater formed over the years, noting that she not only knew the children but also their parents, many of whom returned to the area. For Veater, being a crossing guard was more than just a job; it was a passion that she will miss deeply. She encouraged others to consider becoming crossing guards in their communities, emphasizing the importance of the role for child safety.
